With the introduction of LED (Light Emitting Diode) Technology into small concealable flashlights our lights are brighter and more energy efficient than ever before.  Since an LED is essentially a computer component, electronics are needed to make the diode perform it's function as a flashlight.  By adding these "electronics" to the flashlight, it can perform any function the programmer wants it to perform.  One of the features added to many "tactical flashlights" is the strobe. 

The effects of a strobe light have been identified as being very disorienting to the person on the receiving end of the light and it is specifically designed to give you the reactionary gap you need to prevail against a wide variety of threats. The strobe is extremely disorienting to those on the receiving end, yet allows the operator to maintain excellent situational awareness, particularly in high stress, low light situations.  Much study has been done regarding the use of a strobe and many flashlights now have a strobe function available.
